He discusses surplus capital, foreign economic crises (debts-reparations triangle, global trade plummets), the stock market, poverty, the lack of economic diversity and the credit crunch. And then gets into Herbert Hoover’s (failed ) responses: Balanced Budget, Tariffs, Government Spending.

This, of course, sets the stage for the election of 1932, the rise of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, illusion and hope, The three R’s and the New Deal.

The latest Bob Buzzanco lecture is about the other Roaring Twenties, i.e. the 1920s.

Buzzanco talks about the aftermath of the Great War. The disillusion of the period, including the Red Scare, the Reds and Anarchists, Sacco and Vanzetti, the Seattle strike of 1919 and the Battle of Blair Mountain. And economic growth, the corporate state, Hoover and trade associations and consumer culture. The rise of advertising,Edward Bernays–the original Mad Man and prosperity.

September 11th Remembered

September 11th changed our world.  

Scott (@sparki1969) and Bob (@bobbuzzanco) had a spirited discussion on the impact of the events of September 11, 2001.  We offered personal recollections, talked about the larger historical context in which it occurred, considered the consequences of the attacks–prolonged Mid-East wars and heightened repression at home, discussed the way the attacks and wars were manipulated for “patriotic” reasons, and talked about how it effects the U.S. today, in the era of Trump.
