It’s Scrappy 4th of July, w/ John Quincy Adams, Frederick Douglass, and Scott and Bob

This week we “celebrate” the Fourth of July by discussing two famous orations on that date, John Quincy Adams’s famous “monsters to destroy” speech from 1821 and Frederick Douglass’s legendary “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” from 1852.

We discussed their orations, how they present an alternative vision of this holiday, and how they speak to core issues like anti-imperialism and American freedom.

And of course there’s a lot of ranting about Democrats and Liberals and how they hold a lot of responsibility for recent court decisions and other problems we have.
